Of the twelve signs of the zodiac, perhaps none is as opposed to the idea of being viewed through a lens of surface-level astrology than Aquarius. This has nothing to do with distrust for unconventional ideas, as Aquarius is most at home “outside of the box.” Instead, Aquarius distrusts and even resents any medium of categorization, holding true to their originality above all else.

Aquarians are often considered the “weirdos” of astrology. They view their quirks as assets and are unafraid to stray from society’s norms. Like their fellow air signs, Gemini and Libra, Aquarius thrives in conversation. However, they have little interest in small talk. Easily bored, they look for intellect and the ability to think critically and openly about, well, whatever it is that everyone else isn’t talking about enough!

While introverted Aquarians might shudder when compared to their outgoing opposite sign, Leo, they share a desire to be noticed and appreciated as individuals. Yet, Aquarians won’t demand or even ask for attention, preferring to cooly wait for you to inevitably notice their inimitable means of interacting with the world.

Unorthodox as they may be, Aquarians are ultimately motivated by their love of community. Ruled by Uranus, the planet of revolution and change, Aquarians are visionaries, able to envision a better future that universally allows for the freedom they hold dear.

Though they are symbolized by the water bearer, enigmatic Aqurians themselves are hard to fit in any container. We love Aquarius placements for their open-mindedness, playful curiosity, ability to think objectively, and never ending list of things you’ve never heard of but must check out at once. So, grab a cup, a vase or a pitcher — here is our guide to go with the flow this Aquarius season.

School and Work

As the sun shifts from cardinal Capricorn to fixed Aquarius, you should harness a boost of stamina to carry on the projects you began over the last month. Check in with your initial intentions and assess how the process has gone so far. Resist the temptation to stubbornly adhere to your initial plan if things are going in a different direction than you had originally thought.

Aquarius energy is focused on the big picture, rather than minute details. This is a good time to think objectively about the communities you inhabit at school and at work. Are your peers and co-workers being treated fairly? Are things operating in the most ideal way? Channel your inner visionary to propose changes where necessary, being mindful to consider varying perspectives with an objective state of mind.

Relationships

Speaking as someone with both their Venus and Mars placements in Aquarius, Aquarius season is not the time to jump headfirst into a new relationship. Aquarian energy is cool and reserved during the process of getting to know someone. This is not for lack of care or capacity for warmth; Aquarians are simply protective of their rich inner worlds and too content on their own to take unnecessary risks in terms of intimacy. If you have a new romantic interest at this time, focus on building your foundation of friendship first. Get to know your perspective partner’s interests: their favorite music and movies; their theories about time, space and civilization; the last thing they learned that changed the way they viewed the world.

Once loyal Aquarians have accepted you into their inner circle, their outward coy-ness melts into child-like playfulness. With those they trust, their air sign curiosity and effervescence is on full display. As a fixed sign, Aquarius is built for loyalty. This season is a good time to work on your existing relationships, romantic or otherwise. Spend quality time with your loved ones in an environment that lends to conversation, allowing you to explore theories and stories you’ve never talked about before.

If you have been ignoring potential conflict in any relationship, this a good time to confront it. The Aquarius constellation, the water-bearer, represents the Aquarian ability to hold space for emotion without being swayed by it in their search for true understanding. Aquarian energy allows us to take a removed, objective viewpoint in even the most personal situations, so that a calm, fair discussion can be held.

Free Time

Free time this season is best spent with a focus on conversation and community. Think about your own interests, however niche they may be, and look for communities based on common ground. This might mean exploring your curiosities by researching a topic that fascinates you or learning a new skill. The process of learning grants you time to look inward before sharing your perspective with others, who can expand it even further. Consider how your new knowledge can be beneficial to the collective and seek out clubs, organizations, and volunteer opportunities to enrich others’ lives while also enriching your own.

Self

After assessing your personal goals throughout Capricorn season, Aquarius season provides an opportunity to step back and consider your hopes for the world around you and the role you play within it. Envision your best possible future, not only for yourself, but for society. Now, imagine what steps you can take in order to make this reality a greater possibility. How can you work towards a better future in your day-to-day life, or through your career? Finding a way to contribute to the cause you believe will, in turn, give you greater confidence and purpose within yourself.

About the Author

Victoria Middleton (she/her) is a third year student at The George Washington University studying journalism and mass communication with a minor in women’s, gender and sexuality studies. She discovered her love for writing as a little girl, typing fairytale stories on her parents old Dell and printing them out before taping them into glitter-glue-encrusted cardboard covers. These days, she thinks honest and fully developed stories about women are even better than fairy tales. When she’s not scheming against the male hegemony of the media industry, she can be found thrifting, watching cult films and TV and badly dancing to good music. She has been known to get overly excited about intersectional feminism, astrology and David Lynch.
