But How: Knowing When to Walk Away

But How: Knowing When to Walk Away

About the “But How” Series

Every day, we are inundated with a plethora of lofty, spiritual quotes online. “Vibrate higher,” they say. "Let go of your doubts." "Trust your intuition." But How?! This series was created by energetic intuitive and coach Lenea Sims as a way to make the metaphysical physical so you can real-ize your dreams. Using a mix of creative exercises and simple energy work, this series will make your spiritual ideals actionable in your everyday life.

“Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy.”

In the spiritual and wellness worlds, people tend to be very big on the idea of release. “Release what no longer serves you,” our full moon reports bark at us. “Cut negativity and toxic people out of your life,” say the Instagram captions.

But, if you’ve ever been in a difficult situation, you know just how hard this can be. How do I know if this situation is meant to grow me or if I should just walk away? How do I know when my learning is done here? What would happen if I waited just a bit longer for things to change?

These are, of course, the particularly annoying questions in life because there are no right answers. And, even more devastating: there’s no one who can make these choices, but you.

So, that’s my advice to you: ask yourself for the answers.

But not the “you” you’re thinking of! Instead, ask a future you.

First, imagine them: What does future you look like? Where do they live? What is a day in their life like? Who is around them? How do they find fulfillment? Don’t write the answers down or become too attached to specifics. Instead, close your eyes and imagine their energy. Feel it in your body. Take your time envisioning and processing this. Perhaps early in the morning or very late at night is your only time—set whatever time is quiet for you aside for this.

Next, think about the situation about which you are having trouble making a choice. Imagine it in the future as well. If it’s a job, imagine the energy of doing that job as future you. Does it feel aligned to the energy of future you that present you just imagined? If it’s a relationship with a particular person, imagine the energy of that relationship in years to come. What’s the first image that comes to mind? Is that image speaking the same energetic language as the images of future you?

The key here is to not overthink. Feel into this by trusting the first images that come into your mind. And, above all, be honest with yourself. Your intuition can speak to you, but you must be willing to listen. Lastly, remember that life happens for you, not to you. You are protected and you are chosen so, rest assured, you can never choose wrong.

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or back into safety.”
— Abraham Maslow
